In the Biblical poem Eishet Chayil (Woman of Valor) (Proverbs 31:10-31), the ideal woman is portrayed as one who epitomizes excellence in the responsibilities of domestic and financial management. She does all of this “dressed in strength and majesty”. Made of steel wool, a sink drain, wire mesh and chain, this 2.3 meter high sculpture portrays the juxtaposition of the inherent challenges of caring for a family, with the majesty of the role. This giant steel wool ball gown celebrates the beauty, challenges, and humor of domestic life. It invites viewers to reflect on the tension between idealized beauty and traditional gender roles, as well as the discomfort and expectations of domestic work.
